how extensible is the tree component? i need to add images (depending on tree depth or some data values) and maybe radio buttons. is that feasible?

Theoreticaly yes,
you would just subclass the CheckBoxItemRenderer and use the dataDescriptor in the the commitPropterties() and updateDisplayList() like you would in a normal exension of the Tree.
I didn't reinvent the wheel.:) I just extended the mx.core Tree. ;-)
