Modular Percussion

Here's a few modular percussion presets. Tweak, effect, sample, repeat.

A couple of operational notes.

In row two of the cymbal preset, there are two 2>1 mixers. The output gain controls of these mixers tune the two wave generators. Play with these, the FM depth and the waveform controls. There's some noise in the mix. Take that out for something more ride like.

In row four of the tom preset, next to the DADSR, there's a 2>1 mixer. It's output gain control is a master tune.

The Cl Hat preset can generate all sorts of shakers and maracas. The Stick can make blocks and suchlike.

The samples in the beatbox are exports of these presets, as they are, with a bit of eq here and there. A slither of almost imperceptible reverb on the snare (And probably the kick. Can't remember now) just to give it a sense of space.

Nice. Completely

Nice. Completely coincidentally, a couple of days ago I spent hrs splitting up midi drum track patterns into separate machines. So this would be perfect for playing with that.

Cool as. I didn't wire these up to respond to velocity. So you might want to run a cable from Vel Out to the Master Mod In.

I finally had time to take a look...dude you are the man when it comes to the modular.
That's pretty impressive I must say...

Just curious, do the preset names have anything to do with the keys you designed these to play in?

Oh...I see. All it took was to slide the patterns to see that they didn't change pitch. Atleast on the few that i tried.

Heh. There's no pitch

Heh. There's no pitch information coming from the keyboard. Apart from the ones mentioned, they're tuned from the front panel. The names denote the fact that I've got quite a lot of them.

Not that I want to put you off dropping them in a track as they are (far from it), but I generally get better results retuning a sample of than trying to retune the preset itself. You could tune up the FM element of the snare, but then you might need to optimise the noise filtering to fit with that and, maybe adjust the envelopes a bit and end up with a decent snare. But not like the original tuned up a bit. Just a different snare all together, at a different pitch. Two snares. Hurrah :)

There can be a few inconsistency issues as well. If you repeatedly play the kick, you'll notice that it never sounds quite the same twice. Not a big problem with less kick prominent music, but where the kick's important, e.g. 4 to the floor dance music, it sure is. I tend to sample a string of hits, then pick the best one.

I wouldn't mind hearing how they work out with these MIDI files :)

Sure, I streamlined what I

Sure, I streamlined what I made a couple of days ago by condensing the patterns down from 13 machines to 7. There are no clap patterns, but I suppose borrowing from the snare set would probably work. Or of course making your own. All of the patterns are mapped so that you can swap out the modulars for your beatbox also.

Basically before I had hi lo and mid toms, 2 snares, a ride and ride bell that are now in with the cymbals and a pedal hat that I think I moved to the stick machine. I could also post the original if you want.

Heh...then for the hell of it I swapped out all of the beatboxes and made an all synth version also with all of the patterns shifted to E and B. :)

Dammit, I knew I got those loops for free somewhere but I couldn't remember where. Well I just discovered they were from another app so I removed the link.
